About This Quote

This is almost always the case: A piece of art receives its f(r)ame when found offensive. The first and most common reaction to an art work is that it will be offensive. Sometimes we need time to understand the message of a piece of art and sometimes we feel offended by it right away. It is important for us as artists to make sure that the person who sees the art first (the viewer) is as comfortable as possible with the piece as it is meant to be displayed.

The first reaction of anyone presented with a piece of art is to react with their emotions, not their intellect. When we study something deeply, we can then view it through a more intellectual lens and determine whether or not it will offend someone. We should never present something that we think might offend someone and expect them to react in a way that we would like them to react.
